What a Long Journey Feeds Back to Design

Two years ago, speaking at the World Design City Conference (WDCC) in Shanghai, I called for another design practice, less focused on making stuff, more engaged with building relations. That’s why we founded a platform in Shenzhen called Design Society.

To take this message most seriously for myself, I decided to embark on a bicycle tour conceived for just that: to cultivate and reframe the relationship that is among the most powerful ones in history: the Silk Road. Beyond conflict, even beyond trade, this time the Road  was ridden for a new fabric. The Silk of human dialogue and understanding.

But intentions, if serious, have consequences. Among the many I had to face, were the heat, the cold, the headwind, the distance, the mountains, floods, bad roads, nails and rocks on the pavement, wild animals, agressive guards, and sometimes the necessary distrust to get out of a situation quickly.

Returning to WDCC I shared with the audience, most likely itself somewhere on a creative journey, how the lessons learned on the road could be applied to design and escape from or deal with the pitfalls and setbacks that everyone recognizes in one’s own work.
