The Meaning of Rice “和”的寓意

Look at this picture: a rice paddy with crops and a windmill on the horizon. Energy upon energy.

After traveling 10,000 kilometers, spending 5 months cycling, and consuming half a million calories, I've learned a thing or two about energy.

With nearly 1.5 billion people, a recent history of hard work to rebuild the nation, and ancient cultural traditions that cherish the redeeming power of labor, the Chinese understand energy profoundly. Traditionally, when asking about someone's well-being, the Chinese would inquire, "Have you eaten yet?"

Absolutely, here's a more culturally adapted version:

But it’s not just about understanding what calories provide—energy. More importantly, it's about understanding what they enable: bringing people together and giving meaning to the world—spiritual energy, so to speak.

Consider this symbol:和

It's not only a picture but also a word. It's the Chinese character for "and," essential for expressing logical connections like combinations, cause and effect, and synchronicity. It aids in moving beyond simple speech to eloquence. It’s a cornerstone of civilization.

Now, look again:和

This character itself combines the symbols for a rice plant and a mouth (口). Rice alone is useless when there are no people; similarly, people need rice to thrive. Together, rice and people create society and civilization. Conversely, civilization necessitates both people and rice.

Thus, 和 signifies not only "and" but also embodies harmony and concordance.

Thank you for allowing me to share this reflection, touching upon 10,000 years of precious cultural development.
